Museums are a wonderful place to wander through when you have a free afternoon, as they lend themselves to inspiring guests who ponder the themes which are presented. There are those that cover just about every topic and subject that can be thought of and these subjects are brought to life through collections that are showcased in display cases and on the walls of these interesting edifices. The American Museum of Natural History is one of the best known and most visited.
The American Museum of Natural History, or AMNH, has been in operation since 1869, when the world was quite a different place than it is today. Even by the end of the 19th century, there was not a vast knowledge of many of the lands and ocean regions of the earth. Even less was understood about the diversity of the many cultures outside of the western world.
To put this in perspective, when the American Museum of Natural History first opened it was 1869, and Darwin’s revolutionary theory as expressed in “Origin of Species” had been published just ten years earlier. It would be another 30 years after that until the structure of the atom would be understood, and 40 years before the Einstein’s theories of relativity were first introduced.
During this time of significant scientific advancement and achievement, the AMNH has played an important role in the exploration, the discovery, and the advancement in the natural sciences and scientific theories. A pivotal part of supporting these efforts has been the steady and strategic accumulation of one the greatest museum collections the world has ever known.
