How DirectTV Tivo Relationship Came About
The DirecTV TiVo relationship has been a complicated one ever since the satellite TV giant decided to work with TiVo. Originally, an agreement struck between the companies allowed DirecTV customers to receive maintenance and support when using the TiVo system. The DirecTV TiVo relationship also meant that the two companies could not sue one another over issues such as patent rights.
TiVo
TiVo is a brand of DVR or digital video recorder. The device allows consumers to capture and record live television broadcasts and stores the data in the device’s hard drive storage area for later viewing. The TiVo recorder is a lot like a VCR, except that is saves programs on to non-removable hard disk space. There are many facets to TiVo that have evolved over the years, but that is the basic premise of the device.
In an effort to stay relevant, TiVo began offering its services to customers who utilize HDTV. Most consumers who utilize satellite TV systems also subscribe to HDTV. High Definition channels provide the clearest picture with minimal or no pixel distortion. As other DVR systems became more popular, TiVo realized that its market share was slipping and that they needed to provide new services that were unavailable to subscribers of other services. Working with High Definition service providers was just such an opportunity.
