Explaining The Flash Memory Device

If you hear the term flash memory and your brain suddenly goes blank, you’re not alone. Flash memory is one of the phrases that get thrown around in IT circles fairly regularly. Now is as good a time as any for you to do a little reading and to get caught up on some computer science knowledge. The next time the conversation turns to the technical, you’ll be right in there, knowing exactly what flash memory is and how to use it.

Flash memory is something known as “non-volatile computer memory”. Non-volatile is a fancy term that means the memory device will still hold the memory whether or not the device is powered. Your hard drive is probably the best example of non-volatile computer memory, because you (hopefully) retain all of your files even if your computer is turned off.

Flash memory is used to store memory in other items too, such as memory cards, memory sticks and the ever-popular jump drives. Those with digital cameras or digital video cameras use flash memory because they likely own memory sticks or memory cards that go with their software to store their photos.
