Collecting Perfume Bottles

If you take a look around your fragrance cabinet you may not see a bottle worth a king’s ransom. Today, the bottles are mass produced and are not unique. There are, however, some perfume bottles that can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars because they are handcrafted, signed by the artisan and are extremely rare and old. Each bottle has its own story to tell and you can own a piece of history with a perfume bottle such as this.

The Egyptians and Mesopotamians left behind their clay urns, which held the essential oils they used to anoint their bodies. This is probably one of the earliest forms of perfume bottles that can be found. The style was quite simple and practical. Remains and even whole bottles have been found in the tombs of pharaohs in Egypt. It would be hard to calculate a monetary worth because these pieces are priceless beyond compare due to their historical value.

The glass and ceramic eau de parfum bottles came to us from the Greeks and Romans during their reign. But the real collectible beauties came about in the 16th and 17th century, courtesy of the Venetians and their colorful glass. These pretty baubles are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you are lucky enough to see and touch one in person, then you have definitely hit a milestone in collecting.
