Detecting Teen Stress
Any parent of a teenager knows that helping them manage anger can be a full time job. The stress from school, friends and peer pressure can seem overwhelming to them at times and parents often bear the brunt of their angst. Teen stress can lead to severe health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and even depression. Teens have enough on their plates without having to deal with anger management treatment programs that do not address the underlying issues, but instead focus on the outward signs of rage.
Teens are going through a period of adjustment. They are leaving behind their childhood and making the transition into adulthood where there are new expectations and responsibilities. Child anger over a broken toy or argument with their best friend can give way to teens who lash out with drug and alcohol abuse. The internal pressures of school and their social network begin to take control of their lives. A teen may say one thing, but a different, more confusing emotion may be boiling on the inside and they do not know how to properly express their anguish.
Teen stress is a lot like being locked in a closet and unable to respond to the outside stimuli that is causing their anger. Teens may not even know what these feelings mean or why they are experiencing them. It just feels like a hot bed of emotions which spiral out of control at times. They lash out because they do not know how to deal with these emotions effectively.
