The New York Ballet Theatres
Located on Broadway in New York City, the American Ballet Theatre was launched in 1939. From 1940 to the present time, there have been various people running the artistic development of the stage productions. While the performances are taken on tour globally, New York City is its home and where many dancers audition, perform and take classes. Others donate their money and time or become active members who attend all performances and special member events. While many other theatres offer classes and programs as well, this theatre is the most recognized name, where the greatest ballets are performed by highly talented and trained dancers.
The most notable contributors to the arts through ballet are, of course, the dancers themselves. The American Ballet Theatre has three levels a ballet dancer can be part of: corps de ballet, soloists and principals, who are typically known as the highest ranking dancers. The most recognizable name in ballet is Mikhail Baryshnikov, a Russian born dancer, choreographer and actor. He performed as a principal ballet dancer at this New York City ballet theatre and was artistic director for ten years. In turn, this theatre company has enhanced New York City purely by existing and making its home here. Every year auditions are held here and all over the country as well. While thousands may audition, only the best of the best are chosen to further enhance this ballet troupe.
In 2000, this renowned ballet company performed for the first time ever in China, something many theatres have yet to accomplish. What makes the theatre company’s performances so great has to do with their keeping with tradition, while at the same time keeping up with modern times. Enrollment in a rigorous ballet class schedule is a must for anyone with the ambition to become a great ballet dancer and this New York City ballet venue is where some of the best come to train and attend ballet school. But, the theatre doesn’t just offer classes for young adults; teachers, students of all ages and even schools have the opportunity to take classes through the company.
