Boxing, or what is sometimes called prize fighting, is a sport with deep roots that go way back into history. In fact, the roots of this sport go as far back as the ancient Greeks. But, most people these days think of their favorite heavyweight boxer when they hear that a boxing match has been scheduled and the media hype begins.

Numerous movies, books and plays find their interesting settings revolving around a key character brought to life in the person of a heavyweight boxer. One who is out to beat the odds and prove himself to others, and often to himself as well, in the unfolding of the story.

While the Hollywood movies about the struggling heavyweight boxer often makes for a good story line, there is actually plenty of interest and intrigue that surrounds many of the professional boxers who hit the canvas in today’s bouts.

Heavyweight is a designation for a weight class in both professional and amateur levels of boxing. Of the 17 different weight classes in this sport, it is the class for the largest of boxers and is probably the most widely known category of classes.
