The Academy Awards show recognizes movie actors, writers, producers, film editors etc. for their skills. It is a big deal for anyone to walk the red carpet at the Oscars, and it is also a big deal for the general public. If an actor wins the best actor or best actress award, then he or she is considered a truly great film actor. It is quite interesting to learn the history behind this old tradition.

The Academy Awards show started around eighty years ago. The Oscar, which is the actual award, depicts a knight holding a sword standing on a roll of film. This is the same design that is still in use today. In the earliest years, actors and actresses were nominated for their performances as a whole, in all of their movies, and so, the best actor or actress was nominated because he or she did well in all of their films.

After the third year, however, the academy decided to nominate actors in one film only, each year. As well, in the beginning, all film actors were lumped together into one category. It wasn’t until the 9th Academy Awards show that they incorporated the awards for best supporting actor and best supporting actress. This decision was made because organizations, such as the Screen Actors Guild, complained that the leading actors were always winning because they had longer screen times to show off their skills. When the Oscar awards were first started, only American movies were represented, but in recent years there has been a much greater foreign presence.

With the Academy Awards having gone on for such a long time, you might think that there have been a lot of repeat winners for best actor. However, this occurrence has actually been quite rare. Movie actors who have won more than one statue encompass such names as: Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Cooper and Dustin Hoffman. Nearly every actor aspires to win an Oscar at some point.
