Overview Of The Screen Actors Guild
The labor union that represents all of the actors and actresses in America is the Screen Actors Guild. It is often referred as just SAG. Consisting of over 100,000 TV actors and actresses, as well as movie actors and actresses, and voice actors, SAG’s membership is extensive. SAG also has a large international membership, extending its services to foreign performers as well. Its responsibilities include ensuring fair wages and benefits for members, as well as protection of their royalty rights. Employment assistance is another service that SAG offers its members.
The SAG associates itself with the AAAA (the Associated Actors and Artistes of America and the AFL-CIO). Film productions, or motion pictures, fall under the sole jurisdiction of SAG. TV drama, film drama, internet, radio, and all other media are shared with another union called AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). SAG has many offices across the United States and around the world. Its main office is appropriately located in Hollywood, CA.
Before the Screen Actors Guild came about, Hollywood used to have a reputation for taking advantage of its performers. Grueling hours without breaks were common. Contracts were no less abusive. The contracts were designed to control the lives of the movie actors and other performers both in the studio and out. They also were written in such a way that not only could the studios renew the contract without notice to the performer, but the performer often found that they could not opt out of the contract because of certain clauses that had been written in by the studio.
