In every state, juvenile court records are difficult to access. The legalities pertaining to releasing sealed juvenile records is different in every state. Some states allow a criminal records search when the juvenile has reached the legal age of consent, while others keep the records closed after the youth is an adult. In some cases, this can create an obstacle in serving a defendant with a just sentence. In every case, a portion of the information in the records is available.

Depending on how serious the crime is that the youth committed, crimes committed by a juvenile can count against them in the future. If the crime was serious or violent, then the crime might show up later on when they are an adult. If the records are not sealed, then the child can petition the court to seal the juvenile court records, or the parents can petition the court for a sufficient amount of time, usually between five and six years, after the case has ended. If the petition is approved by the court, all of the arrest records and case records, along with all of the criminal records information, will be sealed.

Depending on the state the juvenile was prosecuted in, his/her records may be sealed when he/she becomes an adult. If a juvenile has committed an adult felony, a criminal records search may be permitted. If a juvenile is convicted of sex crimes, then he must register as a sex offender for life, regardless of his age at the time. Some states routinely close a juvenile’s record once they reach adulthood, while in other states, an offender must file a petition with the courts to seal his juvenile record. The media often gains access to the information in sealed court records. If the information is obtained legally, then they are allowed to release it but they may not reveal the juvenile’s identity.
