For many years you have probably heard people touting reverse osmosis water filters as the very best way to assure that you have good clean water in your home for drinking and for cooking. And, while it is true that these types of water filter systems excel at purifying your water, it is also helpful to have some additional information about what makes a reverse osmosis water filter unique.

Reverse osmosis water filters purify water through a two-step process that helps to assure the end result is the highest quality fluid available. Any such reverse osmosis unit will consist of two different filters: a stage one pre-filter, plus the stage two semi-permeable osmosis membrane.

The step-one pre-filter is normally a carbon-based osmosis water filter. At the pre-filtering phase of the reverse osmosis water filters process, the largest particulate matter and contaminating elements are trapped and removed from the water in preparation for the second phase.

The semi-permeable osmosis membrane allows liquid to pass through it under pressure. When the fluid goes through this second step of filtering, the membrane traps the pollutants and bacteria in the liquid within the porous surface of the reverse osmosis water filters. Because the membrane is so fine, it catches very tiny particles that were missed by the first stage of the filtering process.
