Have you ever heard someone say the expression “warts and all?” It means that you are exposing everything and not covering anything up, letting the blemishes be seen. This expression concerning figurative skin moles was first spoken by the Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell. He was having his portrait painted and unlike other Royals who were having their facial blemishes removed from their paintings, wanted his portrait to be true to his features.

But what warts did Oliver Cromwell not care about being shown in his portrait, when he said “warts and all?” It was most likely known as the common wart. These warts are up-raised patches of rough skin that grow on the normal skin. These warts are caused by the human papilloma virus and can appear on various parts of the body. The spreading of these warts is usually stopped by an individual’s immune system. However, with some types of warts, the immune system can not stop them. In the case of these warts, such as genital warts, also caused by the HPV virus, a physician should be consulted.

In treating warts and to prevent them from spreading it is recommended that the patient does not brush, comb, clip or shave the area where warts are located, and a nail clipper or nail file should not be used to pick at the warts. The patient should always wash their hands thoroughly after touching or tending to the wart. Treating warts is done in many ways. Some patients find relief by merely covering the wart with duct tape.

Other treatments are applying Salcyclic Acid, Canthradin or freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. Doctors sometimes inject Bleomycin or Retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. As a last resort, surgeons will resort to burning, cutting or using a laser beam to remove the warts. Those who believe in natural cures use aloe vera juice, as well as papaya juice because the papaine contained in this juice is found to be very effective on warts.
