Overview Of Malignant Mesothelioma
Asbestos, a very popular mineral a few decades ago for its fire proof and insulation properties, is known to cause a rare type of cancer known as malignant mesothelioma. The asbestos cancer, as it is commonly known, affects the protective membrane of internal organs, i.e. lungs, heart, abdomen, etc. This ailment affects those who work in close contact with things that contain asbestos and there is no known cure. Therefore, the best course of action would be to avoid contact with this substance in the first place. Prevention is always better.
Asbestos mesothelioma is almost always fatal, not because it is more dangerous than any other forms of cancer, but because it takes some 20-25 years to develop to its full blown condition without any major symptoms. The asbestos cancer is discovered only when it manifests acute symptoms, at which time it is usually too late to do anything other than make the patient comfortable. By this time, the patient is likely to be advancing in age as well; most people diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer are aged 60-70 and their bodies may be worn out in more ways than one.
In many cases, malignant mesothelioma affects not only those who are directly exposed to materials that contain asbestos, but also their family and others with whom they meet frequently. This is because asbestos fibers travel undetected on the body, hair, nails and clothes of these workers and from there onto other family members. This in turn affects even those who do not have direct contact, yet is prevalent enough to develop the cancer.
