Neurofeedback As An Alternative Medicine
Neurofeedback is a unique approach to helping children who are afflicted with the disorders of ADD and ADHD. This biofeedback therapy has been shown to drastically lessen the occurrence of symptoms. In a large percentage of cases, the child can either reduce the amount of prescription medications they need to take or completely eliminate the need for them. This fact has allowed many parents to breathe a sigh of relief because of their concern over the potentially, long lasting side-effects of the drugs.
Even though neuro, or biofeedback, as it is sometimes called, has been used in many situations for more than forty years, there are still many who consider this approach to alternative therapy to be experimental. However, the majority of people who are skeptical and want to categorize neurotherapy as experimental are those in the mainstream medical community, and are those who have something to lose by acknowledging the benefits of alternative and holistic medicine and therapies.
Treatment programs that utilize neurofeedback are gaining a great deal of attention and are becoming popular for treating many other conditions, besides ADD and ADHD. It is a totally non-invasive approach and negative side effects seem to be non-existent. However, those involved in a biofeedback program report many, very positive side effects.
The process of a neurofeedback therapy session is thought to have the effect of resetting brain patterns that have developed and are thought to be at the root of many problems. Once reset, the brain can return to performing at optimal levels and the body responds according to these enhanced, or restored, brainwaves to heal and repair itself or to reestablish proper behavior.
