Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which has been loved for its pliability ever since the Greeks found it way back in ancient times. A lot of asbestos related information made it popular during early 20th century. Its properties for insulation, fire resistance and malleability made it a hot favorite as a construction material, so much so that its terribly harmful side-effects were ignored for centuries. Asbestos products caused maladies such as asbestosis, pleural plaques and cancer (mesothelioma) for people who worked and lived around asbestos factories.

The most important asbestos related information is that it can be fatal to humans. The onset of the disease is extremely slow, sometimes taking some 40 years to fully develop; however, once the disease starts manifesting itself, it is only a matter of months before the person dies. They never believed, first of all, that the disease, from which they were suffering in their old age (60s and 70s), was actually the result of their lifetime exposure to asbestos products and other materials containing asbestos.

For example, a family who lived under an asbestos roof didn’t know that breathing it in every day of their lives, ingesting food containing particles of asbestos and allowing it to settle on their skin and eyes, and inhaling it through the mouth and nose, would put them at high risk to develop asbestos cancer sooner or later.
