What Is The Story With Total Fat?

Too much total fat in our diet is helping attribute to heart disease and obesity. We have to look at our lifestyle in order to make important changes in limiting our total fat consumption. A healthy lifestyle is paramount to feeling good and looking our best. It is not about losing weight but about living a longer, healthier life and setting examples for our children.

The total fat enigma came about when scientist discovered that there are “good” fats and there are “bad” fats. The average person is inundated with terms such as unsaturated or monounsaturated. Bad fats will usually be fats that are solid when unheated. Examples of these are animal fats, shortenings and butter. Good fats are the monounsaturated fats that are liquid. Examples of these are peanut oil and vegetable oil.

Everything we eat during the day contributes a portion to our total fat percentage. The key to lowering cholesterol and the bad fats is by finding fats that can not only lower your cholesterol but also help your total fat calories. As we become more aware of the need for a healthy heart, the importance in monitoring cholesterol becomes vital.
