Using Birth Records In Your Family Tree Search

In today’s world, birth records are safeguarded to prevent identity theft. This can be a stumbling block as you research your family roots. While birth records can provide a wealth of information in your search for your history, this sensitive information is protected because it is the key to someone’s identity.

Birth records document an individual’s full birth name, the exact date and time of birth and their parents’ full names. Depending on the time and location in which the birth records were filed, you may also learn the parents’ social security numbers, address at the time of the birth, occupations and other pertinent details. These details can lead your genealogical research in new directions.

Birth records are fairly standard documents today, but in older times, handwritten records filled out by clergy members, medical practitioners, or town clerks were common. Genealogy searches require thinking beyond the people we would normally consider in positions to fill out birth records and tracing down the documents to locations one might not consider usual.
