Desktop computers are different than laptops in a few ways. The first is size. A laptop is a mobile computer that weighs around five pounds. It comes with a built in keyboard, tracking pad and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) which is the equivalent of a desktop computer’s monitor. The whole thing is compact and able to be moved around unlike its clunky, heavier cousin.

Laptops utilize different memory modules than desktop computers. It has to do with DIMM and SO-DIMM. DIMM is Dual In-line memory modules and SO-DIMM is Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module. Both function in the same way, but the SO-DIMM is much smaller in size since it is going into a smaller machine. Both support the same level of bits such as 32 bit data transfers and 64 bit data transfers.

The SO-DIMM is more or less equal to the DIMM in power and speed, but since laptops are space constricted, they are smaller and must utilize less space for the same comparable speeds. There is also a different procedure for upgrading notebooks in comparison to the desktop computer. You will also need to know that there is a distinct difference between an Apple memory and that of a Compaq memory. It is important to only buy products that work with your particular model and series if you want the upgrade to work well for your particular laptop.
