The Architectural World History
The architectural world has seen its fair share of beauty and disaster. Great works of art and architecture styles have come and gone throughout mankind’s history. Some have been lost to natural disasters while others have been lost through war and ignorance. It is a shame when we have knowingly torn down incredible monuments in history that were designed with a specific purpose in mind. But there have been some designs that have lasted and still remain.
If you were to conduct an architectural review on past time periods, the significance would not be lost. Just look at the examples in architecture that still remain. We have the Sistine Chapel, Mount Rushmore, Taj Mahal, and many more that have stood the test of time. Even partial remains of the architectural complexity of the Roman Coliseums are still there for us to appreciate.
But with the sweet comes the sour. Many incredible works of art have been lost over the years. Mankind is the greatest destructive force in the universe. The Library of Alexandria is a great example from ancient times. It is believed that Julius Caesar helped bring about the destruction of the library when he set the Egyptian Fleet on fire in his conquest and pursuit of Pompey. While the fire did not destroy all of the structure, it did destroy over 40,000 scrolls and damaged the structural integrity of the building.
