The decision to become a dental assistant is a great choice. You will be helping out a branch of the healthcare field that is greatly under staffed. A certified dental assistant can practically find a job anywhere he or she wishes because there is a huge amount of open jobs in the dentistry field and simply not enough people to fill these jobs. You can also expect to find a higher rate of pay due to the high demand. It is a win-win scenario where everyone profits.
If you decide to become a dental assistant, then there are a few things you need to know. The first is that you will probably have many job duties. A dental assistant plays many roles. They may be a receptionist one day, a lab technician another day and work on x-rays on the third day. However, if you do not like to multitask, then this is not the job to choose because you will have to do several things at once and you will be seeing several patients in a day.
The dental assistant training will prepare you for many of your job duties. The best training will be on the job and you will get a better feel for what a typical day will be like. The health care assistants act as the patient liaison with the dentist. You will come in, greet the patient and perform the basic cleaning. You may also take the x-rays. Some dental assistants will help with oral surgery and will work in the lab doing dentures and molds of teeth. Your exact job duties will vary but you will not have to do it alone without training.
