Over the course of the last decade or so, there have been an increasing number of businesses that have discovered that they are able to significantly stretch their information technology, or IT, budgets by having all or part of their IT services outsourced. In fact, outsourced IT projects and services are now one of the most talked-about aspects of the IT requirements in medium to large companies. At the same time, because of outsourcing offshore, this business practice has even become a political “hot-potato” and a source of friction and disagreement.
During this highly politicized year, a vast majority of the debates and discussions revolving around various outsourced projects and services have focused heavily on the negative effects to local economies of such business practices. More than ever, companies are being scrutinized and criticized for cutting jobs locally and having those jobs “exported” or handled by companies that are located in countries with a lower standard of living, and which provide their services much less expensively. IT services is one of the major categories of outsourcing services.
This is due, in great part, to the explosive demand for information technology services around the globe. Companies that rely heavily on their information technology infrastructure often find that the cost of providing and maintaining the needed IT services for their employees and customers becomes a large part of their operating budget.
