Graduating from high school is a great experience and it is a new beginning to a fresh new world of academics. You have survived your four years of high school and are now ready to head for those hallowed halls of higher education. But there may be one problem. How are you going to pay for your tuition and other expenses? You may need to look into government grants for college expenses. It is a great way to offset the need for so many student loans.

Everything about school starts in the financial aid office. Your financial aid will start there as well. You will need to fill out a FAFSA, which is a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. The FAFSA will need some demographic information, as well as tax information about you and your parents if you are still considered a dependant. If you are an adult attending school, then the FAFSA will be based on your previous year’s taxes alone.

The amount of the government grants for school expenses that you will be awarded will be shown on a Student Aid Report (SAR) once the FAFSA is complete and turned in for processing. This allows you to determine if you will need additional monies for school, in the form of student loans, such as the Stafford Loan or the Perkins Loan. You may still need to take out loans in order to cover books, fees, and room and board, depending on the cost of the school.
