Your Graphic Design Questions
What is graphic design?
Graphic design is all around us. It is the signs that tell us what the speed limit is as well as the novelty t-shirt advertising Viagra drugs. It is tools that are informative and lets the viewer know something. There is no limit to what graphic design touches. Even business cards are forms of graphic design. It communicates something to us and that something can really be anything that the person designing it wants it to be.
What are the uses for graphic design?
If you need to communicate something through visual means then graphic design is used to enhance the words. It can be used in arts, advertising, education, journalism and education as just a few examples. Let’s use education as our example and explain why graphic design is so important. If you had a text book filled with nothing but words, it would fail to capture and convey the right information to students. Words can be misinterpreted or forgotten easily but with pictures to go along with the words students will remember the material for far longer. It would be impossible to describe a diagram thoroughly enough to make sense to the reader. So a picture of a diagram is used.
Does graphic design actually help sell products?
Without a shadow of a doubt, graphic design helps sell products. Take for example a box of cereal. When you go to pick out a box of cereal would you buy one that has the name printed and bright colors on the box or would you go with the cardboard box with the handwritten name? Chances are probably high that you would go with the professionally decorated box. This is graphic design at work.
