A tribal tattoo can serve many different purposes. For some, it is merely body art; a simple decoration. For others, the symbolic meanings behind the images in the tattoo hold a deep meaning and purpose. For these folks, tribal tattoos represent an opportunity to display to the world certain emotions, thoughts, convictions, and struggles. These tattoos are a symbol of who they are as people and what they want to become. A tribal tattoo, from any culture, can be rich with meaning and can serve as a representative symbol of an individual’s enlightenment.

The first style is found in ancient Egypt. Tattoos of hieroglyphics have become increasingly popular as people are choosing to tattoo themselves with symbols that may be very meaningful to them, but that they want to remain rather cryptic to others. In addition to hieroglyphs, the ancient Egyptians used tattoos to depict religious scenes. Creatures that were half animal and half human represented the Egyptian gods and their beliefs about the afterlife.

Mehndi is the name given to tribal tattoos that originated in Hindu cultures. This henna tattoo is created using henna ink which is made from the dyes found in the henna plant. The ink is reddish-brown in color and is temporary. Unlike other temporary tattoos though, Mehndi does stay for a while, as the henna ink is absorbed into the skin instead of sitting on top of it.
