Poker Rules Basics

Poker rules can be a bit complicated due to their terminology. But if you know how to play the basic game and know what makes up a winning hand, then you will be ahead of the pack. Learning how to play the game well comes with time and experience. But the first step is to know how to make up the winning hand. Is it a pair of deuces or is it a jumble of cards that do not have any meaning? You have to know this before plunking down that big bet.

There is a lot of obscure terminology used in poker. But the basic poker rules for a winning hand are pretty simple. Certain hands rank higher than others. Let’s begin with the best hand possible without using any wild cards. The best hand is called a Royal Flush and is made up of five cards in the same suit, starting with ace and ending with the ten. These are all in numerical order. It goes A-K-Q-J-T. A Straight Flush is a great hand if any five cards, such as 6-5-4-3-2, are in a row and in the same suit.

The next best hand is Four-of-a-Kind. This is four cards of any number. The best hand you can have in this situation is A-A-A-A-K. Obviously, you cannot get Four-of-a-Kind in the same suit. Following this card combination is the Full House. An example of this suit would be A-A-A-K-K. It is three cards of the same number followed by a pair of a different number.
