Celebrating With Votive Candles

You have probably had plenty of opportunities over your lifetime to light candles or to go to a candle lighting ceremony. Candles are used in celebrations all across the world. There are sixteen candles lighting the way for teenagers entering into those dreaded driving years. There are beeswax candles lit at spas to help you relax and enjoy yourself. The world uses candles in a variety of ways yet none are probably used more than votive candles.

Measuring only two inches tall by one and a half inches in diameter, votive candles are pretty small but pack a powerful punch. They come in a variety of colors and scents, though many traditional ceremonies only use white. Lighting candles to celebrate an occasion is nothing new. Many of the ceremonies and traditions date back thousands and thousands of years ago.

One ceremony that has included lighting candles, such as a votive candle, was for an offering to the Greek gods and goddesses. Artemis was often honored by lighting a candle as an offering to the moon, since she was the moon goddess. Other gods and goddesses would have candles burning in their temples by their followers as a way to gain favor.
