There are many different types of compressors available. Compressor manufacturers have a wealth of literature available to help in the decision process. You need to make an educated decision before making your purchase. Money and time can be wasted by running out and purchasing the first compressor you see. There is more to the purchase than just buying one and installing it.

There are three basic types of air compressors. These are rotary screw, centrifugal and reciprocating. Each type also has different styles, including water and air cooled, single stage or multistage, and oil flooded or oil free air. Perusing the literature provided by the manufacturers of compressors will help you to gain a good understanding of how each type works, and is necessary in order to make the right selection for your business. All of them perform the same end function, which is to compress air to a higher pressure, but their methods of accomplishing this differ significantly. These differences help them adapt to different working environments and applications.

The simplest to understand are the reciprocating compressors and the rotary screw air compressor. Both use the compressor pump to take in a volume of air and force it into a smaller volume to create high pressure. One uses a piston and one uses a rotor, respectively, to generate the pressure. Both range from 1 to more than 600 horsepower. Most are lubricated, or oil-flooded. The problem with lubrication is that oil has a tendency to work its way into the air line and causes problems with the air tools and accessories. A separator is used to correct this problem. Compressor manufacturers usually sell the separator with the compressor. Both the reciprocating and the rotary screw air compressor are inexpensive choices.
